La figura de Andy Warhol (1928-1987) es, sin duda, una de las más carismáticas, no sólo en el contexto del pop art norteamericano, sino también en relación con las diversas tendencias que se dieron en la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Artista polifacético -grafista, diseñador, pintor, cineasta, fotógrafo, promotor de grupos musicales y escritor-, se instaló en Nueva York a principios de los años cincuenta y, tras un período en el que su tarea estuvo relacionada con el diseño, empezó a pintar. Pronto se hizo muy famoso y su obra ha llegado a influir de manera decisiva en los artistas de generaciones posteriores.
