Autor de novelas, cuentos y piezas teatrales, Mario Benedetti ocupa también un lugar relevante en el ámbito de la poesía, en el que parte de sus creaciones se han convertido en canción popular. La voluntaria aproximación a la prosa, la construcción de una épica de lo cotidiano propiciada por la incorporación de lo social y lo político, el amor y el humor son algunos de los ejes en torno a los cuales giran los versos del gran escritor uruguayo. La presente antología poética, seleccionada por él mismo y presentada por Pedro de Orgambide, constituye una muestra panorámica y difícilmente mejorable de lo más sustancial y conocido de sus versos.

Mario Benedetti was born in Paso de los Toros, Uruguay in 1920. He was educated at a German school and made a living as a stenographer, cashier, salesperson, accountant, public servant, translator, and journalist, a profession he practiced for four decades at the weekly Marcha, until it was shut down by the dictatorship. That same dictatorship forced him into exile in 1973, after which he lived successively in Argentina, Peru, Cuba, and Spain. A storyteller, poet, essayist, and playwright, he authored more than seventy books translated into eighteen languages. Among his literary works, the poetic anthologies Inventario and Inventario Dos, the novels La tregua, Gracias por el fuego, Primavera con una esquina rota, the short story collections Montevideanos, La muerte y otras sorpresas, Con y sin nostalgia, and the verse novel El cumpleaños de Juan Ángel stand out.
