Takeshi Obata nació en 1969 en Niigata, Japón. Este dibujante de manga y diseñador de personajes ganó en 1985 el Premio Tezuka con la historia "500 Kounen no shinwa", lo que le permitió dedicarse profesionalmente al mundo del manga. En 1989 comienza su colaboración con la revista "Shonen Jump" con el manga "Nonno Cyborg G". Su fama no deja de aumentar mientras sigue compaginando su trabajo como mangaka con su faceta de diseñador: de 1999 a 2003 triunfa con "Hikaru no Go", un manga guionizado por Yumi Hotta ambientado en el mundo del go, un juego tradicional japonés. Pero su popularidad alcanza cotas increíbles con "Death Note", un shonen atípico guionizado por Tsugumi Obha que de 2004 a 2006 mantuvo en vilo a los lectores de la "Shonen Jump". Es en las páginas de esa misma revista donde, y de nuevo con guión de Tsugumi Obha, regresa por todo lo alto con "BAKUMAN.", una obra ambientada en el mundo del manga profesional cuyos 20 volúmenes se publicaron de 2008 a 2012. Tras adaptar al manga la novela "ALL YOU NEED IS KILL", Obata colabora con el guionista Nobuaki Enoki en "Los Juicios escolares" antes de volver a trabajar con Ohba en su nuevo trabajo, "Platinum End".
