Sergio Ramírez (Masatepe, Nicaragua, 1942) is one of the most prominent writers in Central America. His literary career began with stories published since 1960 and his first novel, Tiempo de fulgor, in 1970. In 1977, he joined the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and played a key role in the revolution that overthrew the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza. After the victory, he was vice president of Nicaragua between 1985 and 1990. However, he retired from politics in 1996 to fully dedicate himself to literature.

In 1999 he published Adiós muchachos, a testimony of his experiences during the revolution and the subsequent political frustration after the FSLN's electoral defeat in 1990. This work is considered a memoir of a generation that fought for common ideals of rebellion.

Ramírez has been internationally recognized with awards such as the Alfaguara de Novela (1998) and the Cervantes Prize (2017), being the first Central American to receive the latter. In 2024, the University of Guadalajara awarded him an honorary doctorate, highlighting his commitment to freedom of expression and democracy. He currently resides in Spain after being stripped of his Nicaraguan citizenship by the regime of Daniel Ortega.
