El contexto en que fueron pensados y escritos los ensayos que conforman el presente volumen es explicitado con abierta claridad por el autor de los mismos: Comencé este libro con la melodía de las bombas alemanas, y comienzo este segundo capítulo con el ruido añadido del bombardeo. Los destellos amarillos de los cañones iluminan el cielo, las esquirlas repiquetean en los tejados y el puente de Londres se derrumba, se derrumba, se derrumba (El león y el unicornio: el socialismo y el genio inglés, 1941). Un lector aguijoneado por una premura desaconsejable o que se deje conducir por las meras apariencias, habida cuenta de los años en que están fechados cada uno de los escritos, podría pensar que se trata de un libro inactual, que incurre en el anacronismo, lastrado por la rémora de un pretérito, cuanto menos, remoto. Tal conclusión supondría un error de considerable alcance. En principio, se podría alegar que la literatura en la más amplia concepción de la palabra- no es, a diferencia de otras disciplinas, una práctica de carácter progresivo, al menos en tal sentido: nadie en su sano juicio preferiría entregarse en manos de un cirujano que empleara un instrumental del siglo pasado. Pero a diferencia de la medicina (o el urbanismo, o la física, o la arquitectura), la literatura no atrasa ni adelanta a favor de la línea del tiempo. Las reflexiones de Platón, Hegel o Heidegger no son superadas por el último filósofo consagrado por los suplementos culturales; Homero, Dante o Quevedo no le van en zaga al recentísimo novelista entronizado por el mercado editorial; en términos más que generales, sucede exactamente lo contrari

Eric Arthur Blair (Motihari, British Raj, June 25, 1903-London, United Kingdom, January 21, 1950), known by his pen name George Orwell, was a British novelist, journalist, essayist, and critic born in India, author among other works of the dystopian novels Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949)

His work bears the mark of autobiographical experiences lived by the author in three stages of his life: his position against British imperialism which led him to commit as a representative of the colonial law enforcement forces in Burma during his youth; in favor of democratic socialism, after having observed and suffered the living conditions of the working social classes in London and Paris; and against Nazi and Stalinist totalitarianisms after his participation in the Spanish Civil War, on the Republican side

In addition to being a chronicler, literary critic, and novelist, he is one of the most prominent essayists in the English language of the 1930s and 1940s. He is also known for his criticisms of totalitarianism in his allegorical short novel Animal Farm (1945) and his dystopian novel 1984 (1949), written in his last years of life and published shortly before his death, in which he creates the concept of "Big Brother," which has since entered the common language of criticism of modern surveillance techniques.
