Meursault, oficinista en Argel, se entera de que su madre ha muerto —hoy o ayer, no lo sabe—, en el asilo donde vivía olvidada. La entierra sin lágrimas, pues Mersault carece de la menor empatía hacia todo lo humano. «Humano soy, y por lo tanto, todo lo humano me es indiferente», parece rezar su singular código moral que le permite vivir de espaldas a la sociedad. De regreso en Argel, Meursault va a nadar y encuentra a una antigua colega, María. Van al cine a ver una película cómica y luego se hacen amantes. Un día Meursault es invitado por Raymond, un vecino exboxeador, a pasar un domingo en la playa. Meursault va allí con María y tras la comida, los hombres caminan por la playa y conocen a dos árabes, incluido el hermano de la amante de Raymond. Pelean y Raymond resulta herido. Luego Meursault, pistola en mano, solo en la playa y bajo un sol inclemente, encontrará por casualidad al árabe sobre la arena, junto a un cuchillo... Su destino cambiará en décimas de segundo y seguirá un largo proceso de once meses, durante los cuales nada alterará en lo más mínimo una conciencia que percibirá la propia existencia desde la extrañeza y la distancia, extranjero del mundo y de sí mismo.

Albert Camus (Mondovi, Algeria, November 7, 1913 – France, January 4, 1960) was a French novelist, essayist, and philosopher, whose career established him as a key figure in twentieth-century thought and literature. Tiene ciertos errores de tipeo pero en si es buen libro, tiene una letra de tamaño agradable a la vista y fácil de leer lo cual la hace cómoda y es una bonita edición recomendaría otra editorial que no mantuviera a su traductor anónimo pero si la compran tampoco creo que haya mayor problema a la hora de leerlo.
