Valerie Thomas is an Australian writer born in Melbourne, recognized for her contribution to children's literature. She worked as a teacher in Australia and Europe, and also as an educational researcher in the area of spelling. Her passion for travel has taken her around much of the world, including places like Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands. This global experience has influenced her writing, adding diversity and richness to her stories.

Her most notable work is the Winnie the Witch series, started in 1987 in collaboration with illustrator Korky Paul. The series has sold over seven million copies and has been translated into more than ten languages. Among the most famous titles are Winnie in Winter (1996), Winnie's New Computer (2003), and Winnie's Amazing Pumpkin (2009). The series was renamed in 2016 as Winnie and Wilbur, reflecting the importance of the cat Wilbur in the stories. Winnie's adventures have been adapted into various formats, including books for early readers and an animated series.
