El pensamiento de Emmanuel Levinas pertenece por derecho propio a la historia de la fenomenología contemporánea y a la historia de la filosofía sin más. Su obra, sinEncuadernación: RústicaColección: Estrucuras y Procesos. Filosofía embargo, sigue siendo difícil de captar en su conjunto, por su vastedad, su dispersión y la riqueza de sus registros, no sólo filosóficos. A esa comprensión ha de contribuir el conocimiento de sus escritos inéditos.Este volumen recoge las que cabe llamar notas de investigación filosófica del periodo que se extiende desde mediados de los años treinta hasta mediados de los sesenta. Destacan entre ellas los «Cuadernos del cautiverio», escritos entre 1940 y 1945. Son apuntes de una filosofía en búsqueda que a menudo no han hallado un eco directo en la obra publicada. Pero son asimismo testimonio del escritor que ambicionaba realizar una obra no solo filosófica sino novelística.Especial interés revisten los «Escritos sobre el cautiverio», páginas sobrias y hermosas que describen la vida de los prisioneros, despojada de todo bien propio, y evocan su dignidad en medio de una existencia ruda y fría entregada a la muerte. Las «Notas filosóficas diversas», escritas en los años cincuenta, pertenecen a la etapa de relativo silencio editorial en la que, privado del reconocimiento universitario, Levinas dirige la Escuela Normal Israelita Oriental. Corresponden, pues, a las investigaciones llevadas a cabo entre El tiempo y el otro (1948) y Totalidad e infinito (1961), en las que ocupan un lugar central las reflexiones sobre la metáfora.

Emmanuel Levinas (Kaunas, Lithuania, 1906 - Paris, France, December 25, 1995) was a prominent 20th-century philosopher, known for his contributions to ethical philosophy and his focus on otherness and transcendence. He studied Philosophy at the University of Strasbourg (1923-1928) and delved into phenomenology in Freiburg, where he was a student of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. He became a French citizen in 1930 and began to spread phenomenology in France with works like The Phenomenological Theory of Intuition.

After World War II, during which he was a prisoner, Levinas developed an innovative ethical philosophy, influenced by thinkers like Franz Rosenzweig and Martin Buber. Among his most influential works are Totality and Infinity (1961) and Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence (1974), which explore the concept of the relationship with the other as the basis of ethics.

In addition to his philosophical texts, Levinas wrote commentaries on the Talmud, such as Four Talmudic Readings (1968) and From the Sacred to the Holy (1977). After his death, posthumous editions of his works continued to be published, such as God, Death, and Time (2006), Alterity and Transcendence (2014), and New Talmudic Readings (2017).
