Desde Platón y a lo largo de toda la tradición cristiana, la visión de la realidad, de la esencia del ser humano, responde a una concepción dual de la moralidad, en su vertiente filosófica o religiosa. En tiempos modernos -El extraño caso del Dr. Jekyll y Mr. Hyde es el modelo-, este tema se ha convertido también en un asunto literario y, como estrambote, del cine. La moraleja del relato de Stevenson es que el mal está en nosotros, es un constituyente de nuestro ser; podemos derrotarlo pero jamás eliminarlo del todo. No debemos concederle ninguna oportunidad, no podemos jugar con él; de lo contrario corremos el riesgo de que nos destruya como a Jekyll.

Robert Louis Stevenson (Edinburgh, Scotland, 1850 - Samoa, 1894) is a Scottish writer, one of the great classics of 19th century literature. Master of adventure and fantasy novels, his work achieved popular and enduring success. Among his most famous titles are Treasure Island (1883), The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886), and Black Arrow (1888), all of which have been translated into multiple languages and adapted numerous times for film, theater, and television. Due to his fragile health, Stevenson was a tireless traveler, also becoming a prominent travel essayist. He spent his last years in the Samoa Islands, where he died.
