Gainax fue un estudio de animación japonés fundado en 1984 por un grupo de aficionados al anime y al manga que se conocieron trabajando en producciones independientes y en convenciones de ciencia ficción. Con una estética arriesgada y un estilo narrativo experimental, el estudio rápidamente se convirtió en un referente dentro de la industria por su capacidad de fusionar géneros, romper convenciones y proponer historias cargadas de simbolismo y crítica social.

Su obra más influyente es sin duda Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995), serie que redefinió el género mecha y marcó un antes y un después en la animación japonesa gracias a su complejidad psicológica, su narrativa no lineal y su profundidad filosófica. Además de Evangelion, Gainax ha trabajado en títulos como Gunbuster, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water y FLCL, que consolidaron su reputación como pioneros en la animación contemporánea.
