En los poemas de Katatay, Arguedas resumió todo lo que pensaba y todo lo que sentía; todo lo que había estudiado como intelectual, todo lo que había mirado como etnógrafo, todo lo que había oído por haber quedado inscrito en un lugar de frontera: entre el quechua y el castellano, entre lo que todavía brilla, pero que está por apagarse, entre el amor profundo y esa ardiente sangre que grita, entre la herida colonial y la incansable voluntad de reparación.
Con fuerza inusitada, con belleza lírica, con una intensidad apabullante, estos poemas marcan el patrón colonial de poder, pero también las posibilidades de construir una sociedad diferente más allá del individualismo capitalista y de su desprecio por la naturaleza hoy convertida en un pobre recurso para el enriquecimiento de unos pocos. “Dame tu fuerza, hijo del Dios Serpiente” dice un verso. En estos poemas, los lectores temblamos con Arguedas porque avizoramos una fuerza que está latente y porque reconocemos, a pesar de todo, que otro mundo siempre es posible.

He authored novels and stories that have led him to be considered one of the great representatives of Peruvian literature. The critic Martin Seymour-Smith regards Arguedas as "the greatest novelist of our time", who wrote "some of the most powerful prose the world has ever known".
