Olivia tenía cuatro años cuando leyó, por primera vez, la mente de su madre. La estaba mirando y vio que no movía los labios; sin embargo, escuchó con claridad la voz de su madre en el interior de su cabeza. No le extrañó; cuando se tienen cuatro años hay pocas cosas que te extrañen. A partir de ese momento, el poder de Olivia creció poco a poco. Cada vez podía leer los pensamientos durante más rato; y, aún más importante, comenzó a «oír» las mentes de otras personas, aparte de las de sus padres. Entonces Olivia descubrió algo: la mente de cada persona tiene un «olor», o un «sabor», o un «sonido» o un «tacto» distinto.
