Trata de personas, violencia, prostitución y muerte; y, entreverado con todo esto, el amor. El Chino y Salvina salen de Tenancingo, para cruzar la frontera y caer en las garras de El Gringo. Una vez del otro lado, a los hombres los pone a trabajar en los plantíos de fresa y a las mujeres las prostituye. Salvina es una de sus favoritas. Cada tanto se acuesta con ella y le da permiso de pasar las noches con El Chino, quien resulta bueno para los negocios, así que le va soltando las riendas, lo vuelve parte de su gente al igual que a Luciano, el primo del Chino, hasta que se ganan su confianza y lo asesinan. Pero El Chino y Luciano no son mejores que El Gringo, se quedan con sus negocios y con los mojados que siguen llegando del otro lado de la frontera. Abrirán un centro nocturno y traficarán mujeres, con la misma crueldad con la que a ellos los usaron. Esta es una novela escrita en forma poética llena de traiciones, venganza y honor en la que los personajes sortearán toda clase de vicisitudes que reflejan la realidad de nuestro tiempo. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION El Chino and Salvina leave from Tenancingo to cross the border, and fall into the clutches of El Gringo. Once on the other side, the men are sent to work in the strawberry fields and the women are forced into prostitution. Salvina is one of his favorites. Every so often, he sleeps with her and gives her permission to spend nights with El Chino, who turns out to be good at business. So El Gringo loosens the reins little by little and brings him on board along with his cousin Luciano, until they gain his trust and then kill him. But El Chino and Luciano are not any better than El Gringo; they keep up his business and the shady treatment of the immigrants who cross the border. They open a nightclub and traffic women, all with the same cruelty that they faced when they arrived. This is a novel written in poetic form, full of betrayal, vengeance, and honor, in which the characters negotiate all types of obstacles that reflect the reality of our time.

Jorge Volpi (Mexico, 1968) is the author of the novels La paz de los sepulcros and El temperamento melancólico. With En busca de Klingsor (Biblioteca Breve and Deux Océans-Grinzane Cavour awards) he began a “Twentieth Century Trilogy”, the following parts of which are El fin de la locura and No será la Tierra. He has also written the short novels collected in the volume Días de ira, as well as Sanar tu piel amarga, El jardín devastado and Oscuro bosque oscuro. He is the author of the essays La imaginación y el poder, La guerra y las palabras, Mentiras contagiosas (Mazatán Award for the best book of the year 2008), El insomnio de Bolívar (Debate-Casa de América Award, 2009) and Leer la mente. In 2009, he received the José Donoso Award from Chile for his entire body of work. He has been a professor at Emory, Cornell, Las Américas de Puebla, Pau, Catholic University of Chile, National Autonomous University of Mexico, and Princeton. He has been a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation and a member of the National System of Creators of Mexico. He has been decorated as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France and with the Order of Isabel la Católica of Spain. He contributes to various newspapers and the magazine The Nation. His books have been translated into twenty-five languages.
