Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153) was an influential French Cistercian monk, theologian, and mystic, considered one of the most prominent figures of the 12th century in Europe. He was born in the castle of Fontaine-lès-Dijon, in Burgundy, France, and was educated in the nobility. At the age of 22, he entered the Cistercian Order and, at 23, founded the Abbey of Clairvaux, which became the core of a monastic expansion that founded 68 monasteries across Europe

Bernard was a fervent advocate for austere monastic life and doctrinal purity. He actively participated in the defense of the papacy during the schism of Anacletus II and opposed the teachings of Abelard, promoting a theology based on faith and devotion. Moreover, he was the main promoter of the Second Crusade, preaching in France and Germany to mobilize Kings Louis VII and Conrad III

His devotion to the Virgin Mary was central to his spirituality, promoting a deep Marian veneration that influenced the medieval Church. He wrote numerous sermons and letters, and his mysticism focused on the union of the soul with God. He was canonized in 1174 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1830.
