English summary: In India, the literary tradition goes back to the second millennium BCE. Indigenous scripts, however, appear only in the third century BCE. Is it possible to preserve extensive and very complex texts through an exclusively oral transmission during such a long time? This question continues to prove highly controversial. However, the rather special relation between oral transmission and writing is a distinctive feature of ancient Indian civilization. Apparently the Buddhists can be counted among the first who undertook steps towards a change of media. This is suggested by Indian manuscripts that were unearthed about twenty years ago in Pakistan and Afghanistan. They are by far the oldest ever found, and they preserve Buddhist texts. German description: Literarische Zeugnisse gehen in Indien bis ins zweite vorchristliche Jahrtausend zuruck, aber eine eigene Schrift scheint es erst seit dem 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. zu geben. Kann es moglich sein, umfangreiche und hochkomplexe Werke uber einen derartig langen Zeitraum durch eine ausschliesslich mundliche Uberlieferung zu bewahren? Diese Frage wird seit langem kontrovers diskutiert. Bemerkenswert ist hier allerdings das besondere Verhaltnis zwischen Mundlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit im alten Indien. Die Buddhisten zahlten zu den ersten, die sich an den Medienwechsel gewagt haben. Dies legen zumindest die bei weitem altesten indischen Handschriften nahe, die man vor zwanzig Jahren in Pakistan und Afghanistan entdeckt hat und die buddhistischen Inhalts sind.
