(New York, 1933-2004) writer, novelist, philosopher, essayist, professor, film director, and American screenwriter. She began her literary career in 1963 and established herself as one of the leading figures in the intellectual movements of the sixties. She is highly esteemed, both for her works and for her denunciation of major contemporary social and political issues.
