La fascinación de Poe por el terror; lo macabro y lo sobrenatural se encarna en individuos proclives al pecado y la autodestrucción, en imágenes antropomórficas del mal, como diablos, fantasmas y vampiros, y en temas como la venganza, la culpa y la autopunición, el sadismo, la influencia del alcohol, el poder sobrenatural de la voluntad, o todos los relacionados con la muerte, como la descomposición de cadáveres, el entierro aún en vida o la reanimación de los muertos.
