Synopsis "Romancing the Tar Baby: Performance, Representation and the Emotional Economy of Cross-Racial Sex"

First published in 2001 and revisited in 2015, Romancing the Tar Baby takes its title from the Uncle Remus stories of the Old South to expose the ways that race, like the fabled doll made of pitch, continues to affix itself to heterosexual performances of black-white sex in the US today. Using an economic metaphor that situates black-white sex as a highly nuanced exchange of risk and reward, this qualitative work chronicles cross-racial sexual actors' talk to explore the notion that heterosexual performances of black-white sex in the US continue to be important and perilous sites of identity work for both blacks and whites in contemporary US culture. Featuring bold, frank and powerful narrative data from research participants and the author herself, Romancing the Tar Baby leverages a specialized qualitative pattern response research methodology, together with a blend of performance theory, critical race theory and film theory to uncover the ways that real-life performances of black-white sex are mirrored and molded by popular culture's filmic representations.
