Lee, an indirect witness to the events, was inspired by this incident to write her first and only novel known until 2015, To Kill a Mockingbird, now a literary classic. A personal friend of Truman Capote, Lee decided to retire from the public eye when she gained fame. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961. In 2015, the novel Go Set a Watchman was rediscovered, initially rejected by her publishers and one of its subplots is what led to To Kill a Mockingbird.
