Matthew G. Lewis
July 9, 1775, London - May 14, 1818, died at sea while returning from a trip to the West Indies
Matthew Gregory Lewis was an English playwright and novelist who at the age of nineteen published his masterpiece: _The Monk_, which was so extraordinarily successful that he began to be known as Monk Lewis. Influenced by the novelist Ann Radcliffe and the German literature of his time, _The Monk_ is one of the undisputed peaks of the Gothic novel. The violence, horror, and eroticism fascinated and scandalized society equally at the time. Its pages tell the story of Ambrosio, a supposedly virtuous abbot who is tempted by the devil in the guise of a maiden. H. P. Lovecraft said of it that it is “a masterpiece of true nightmare whose general Gothic elements are seasoned with a host of macabre features.” Lewis wrote other interesting works, such as _The Castle Spectre, Tales of Terror, and Romantic Tales;_ but none achieved the popular recognition of The Monk.
