Ricardo de la Cierva
Ricardo de la Cierva y Hoces (Madrid, 1926–2015) was a Spanish historian and politician, noted for his prolific output on the Second Republic, the Civil War, and Francoism. He held doctorates in Chemical Sciences and in Philosophy and Letters, and served as a professor at the universities of Granada and Alcalá de Henares. During the Transition, he was a senator and deputy for Murcia, and held the position of Minister of Culture in 1980 with the Union of the Democratic Centre. Later, he joined the Popular Alliance.

Among his most outstanding works are History of the Spanish Civil War (1969), History of Francoism (1975), Francisco Franco. Historical Biography (1981), The Hopeless Right (1987), and 1939. Agony and Victory (1989). In 1988, he was a finalist for the Planeta Prize with Student of Freedom, the first part of a trilogy about Isabel II. Additionally, he received the Espejo de España Award for 1939. Agony and Victory and the Mariano de Cavia Award in 1975.
