Shel Silverstein nació en 1930. Creció en Chicago y creó sus primeros dibujos para los lectores adultos del periódico Stars and Stripes cuando era soldado en Japón y Corea en los años cincuenta. También aprendió a tocar la guitarra y a escribir canciones, entre ellas A Boy Named Sue para Johnny Cash y The Cover of the Rolling Stone, cantada por Dr. Hook.
