Synopsis "A Technical History of America's Nuclear Weapons vol. II"

A nuclear enthusiast, the author decided to write book on the history of American nuclear-weapons after a visit to the Titan II museum in Green Valley, Arizona, where the docents couldn't answer many of his questions. This turned into a ten-year project.

In his spare time, the author collects flights in vintage aircraft, a passion left over from his days working as a geological surveyor in Canada's Arctic. He is shown preparing to give a Stearman bi- plane a workout.

Since 1945, the United States Armed Forces have fielded 69 different nuclear and thermonuclear weapons on approximately 120 weapon systems. The Air Force and the Navy currently deploy nine types of nuclear weapon on five nuclear weapon systems. The DOD maintains about 2,000 bombs and warheads (tactical and strategic) on active duty. It keeps approximately the same number in reserve.

A Technical History of America's Nuclear Weapons: Volume II - Developments from 1960 Thrrough the Present, tells America's nuclear story in a straightforward, easy to understand manner assisted with the help of illustrations at the start of each chapter. Once again, American nuclear weapons and delivery systems are presented in a chronological order. Volume II tells the continuing saga of weapons development through the height of the Cold War and into the era of heightened trust following the peace accords of the early 1990s.

With renewed hostility from Communist and former Communist States, Volume II picks up the nuclear story with discussions of the B-21 Raider stealth bomber, the GBSD ICBM, and the Columbia SSBN that will form the basis for the new Strategic Triad. Volume II ends with a dicussion of the implications of failure to reah a new Arms Limitation Ttreaty.
