The importance of the carbon cycle is accentuated by its complex interplay with other geochemical cycles (such as nitrogen and water), its critical role in economic and other human systems, and the global scale of its interactions. The need for improved understanding of the global carbon cycle and better research coordination led to the development of the U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Plan.
