Im ersten Teil wird seine Biographie anhand von Materialien aus dem Nachlass nachgezeichnet. Die Autorin konnte sich dabei auf Tagebücher und persönliche Papiere Gongs sowie auf seine umfangreichen Korrespondenzen stützen. Im zweiten Teil wird das gesamte literarische Werk Alfred Gongs vorgestellt und analysiert: Neben der Lyrik, Prosa und den Dramen findet auch seine Tätigkeit als Herausgeber und Literaturkritiker Beachtung. Im dritten Teil werden 30 Gedichte aus dem Nachlass des Autors erstmals veröffentlicht.
