English summary: After many years of intensive research, this long-awaited second volume completes the "Geschichte und Archaologie Syriens" (history and archaeology of Syria) project. While part two concentrates on Syria from the period of the Achaemenid Empire through to Islamisation, part one covers the ancient history of Syria. Thirty-nine contributions in English, French and German comprehensively examine Syria's history, culture and archaeology from the Neolithic Age to the Neo-Babylonian period. Surviving written sources help in tracing historical developments while stratigraphic findings provide a basis for the categorization and thematic presentation of archaeological monuments (architecture, art, glyphics). The contributors to this anthology, in part themselves former and hopefully soon to be again, field archaeologists in Syria highlight the various aspects of the development of a country sandwiched between Mesopotamia, Anatolia and the Mediterranean from different perspectives; a country that kept generating its own significant individual culture despite all external influences. German description: Nach langen Jahren intensiver Forschung vervollstandigt nun der noch ausstehende zweite Teilband das Projekt einer 'Geschichte und Archaologie Syriens'. Wahrend Teil 2 sich mit Syrien von der Achamenidenzeit bis zum Islam befasst hatte, behandelt Teil 1 die syrische Fruhgeschichte. In 39 englisch-, franzosisch- und deutschsprachigen Beitragen werden die Geschichte, die Kulturgeschichte und die Archaologie Syriens vom Neolithikum bis zur neubabylonischen Zeit umfassend dargestellt. Dabei wird die historische Entwicklung mit Hilfe der erhaltenen Schriftquellen nachgezeichnet und die archaologischen Denkmaler werden anhand von stratigraphischen Befunden gegliedert und nach Sachgruppen (Architektur, Bildkunst, Glyphik) geordnet prasentiert. Die Beitrager des Sammelbands, die zum uberwiegenden Teil selber als Ausgrabende in Syrien tatig waren und hoffentlich bald wieder sein konnen, beleuchten aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln heraus die verschiedenen Aspekte der Entwicklung dieses Landes zwischen Mesopotamien, Anatolien und dem Mittelmeer, das trotz aller ausseren Einflusse immer wieder eine bedeutende eigenstandige Kultur hervorgebracht hat.
