El 16 de diciembre de 1944, Hitler inició su «última jugada» en los nevados bosques y escarpados barrancos de las Ardenas, confiando en que podría dividir y derrotar a los Aliados. Pretendía así cambiar el curso de una guerra que había llegado a una situación angustiosa, con los ejércitos soviéticos avanzando por el este en suelo alemán. Los Aliados fueron sorprendidos por dos ejércitos blindados. Civiles belgas abandonaron sus casas, temiendo la venganza alemana. El pánico se extendió hasta París. Mientras algunos soldados estadounidenses huyeron o se rindieron ante la brutal agresión de los nazis, otros resistieron heroicamente y lograron frenar su avance.

Las durísimas condiciones invernales y la brutalidad de la batalla se han comparado con el Frente Oriental. De hecho, las Ardenas fue la contraparte de Stalingrado del Frente Occidental. Ambos lados cometieron crímenes atroces, motivados por la desesperación y la venganza. Las Ardenas, que involucró a más de un millón de hombres, fue la batalla que finalmente, el 25 de enero de 1945, doblegó a la temible Wehrmacht.
