This book responds to these questions succinctly and illustratively, focusing on the historical trajectory of the relationship between architecture and criticism. Its scope begins with nineteenth century pioneers of architectural criticism and includes key figures in modern historiography such as Sigfried Giedion, texts by architects like Adolf Loos and Le Cobusier, movements such as existentialism, phenomenology, iconography, and structuralism, all the way to the post-structuralist landscape of Peter Eisenman, Rem Koolhaas, and Kenneth Frampton. Desde su primera edición en 1999, Arquitectura y crítica se ha convertido en uno de los textos introductorios de referencia sobre crítica e historiografía de la arquitectura. Qué es la crítica? Cuáles son sus objetivos y sus significados? Tiene algún sentido? Este libro, que llega a su tercera edición, responde a estas cuestiones de manera breve y didáctica, centrándose en la trayectoria histórica de las relaciones entre arquitectura y crítica. Partiendo de los pioneros de la crítica arquitectónica del siglo xix, los personajes clave de la historiografía moderna como Sigfried Giedion o los textos de los arquitectos protagonistas como Adolf Loos o Le Corbusier, pasando por las diferentes interpretaciones derivadas del existencialismo, la fenomenología, la iconografía o el estructuralismo, como Aldo Rossi, Manfredo Tafuri y Colin Rowe, hasta llegar al panorama postestructuralista con nombres como Peter Eisenman, Rem Koolhaas o Kenneth Frampton, esta breve guía básica presenta un recorrido histórico de la crítica arquitectónica que permite comprender las claves historiográficas de la arquitectura desde los orígenes hasta la actualidad. Josep Maria Montaner (Barcelona, 1954) es doctor arquitecto y catedrático de Composición en la Escuela de Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB-UPC). Ha sido profesor invitado en diversas universidades de Europa, América y Asia, y es autor de numerosos artículos y publicaciones como Sistemas arquitectónicos contemporáneos (2008), La modernidad superada (2011) y Arquitectura y política. Ensayos para mundos alternativos (2011, con Zaida Muxí) publicados también por la Editorial Gustavo Gili. Colabora regularmente en revistas de arquitectura y en los diarios españoles El País y La Vanguardia.

Josep Maria Montaner (Barcelona, 1954) is an architect and professor recognized in the field of contemporary architecture. PhD in Architecture and professor at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB-UPC), he has taught courses and given lectures at various universities in Europe, America, and Asia. In 2005, he received the National Urbanism Award of Spain for his articles in the newspapers El País and La Vanguardia.

Among his most notable works are "Contemporary Architectural Systems" (2008), "Surpassed Modernity" (2011), and "Architecture and Politics: Essays for Alternative Worlds" (2011), the latter co-authored with Zaida Muxí.
