Synopsis "Battle to the Southwest of Xiakou"

The Battle to the southwest of Xiakou was an integral part of the Battle of Red Cliffs, preceding the major engagement at Wulin , located within modern day Honghu) when Cao Cao s navy was destroyed. The importance of this battle was that when the allied force of Liu Bei and Sun Quan achieved a victory in the battle, Cao Cao s advance was halted and a stalemate was reached, paving the way for the allies final victory of the Battle of Red Cliffs . Another benefit resulted from the allies victory of this battle was that the southern shore of the Yangtze River was cleared of Cao Cao s force, so allies rear and flank were secured, thus also helped to ensure allies final victory in the Battle of Red Cliffs. This important battle, however, was one of the most overlooked and understated battle in the Three Kingdoms era, because it was eclipsed by its successor, the huge engagement fought at Wulin in the Battle of Red Cliffs after a stalemate resulting from this battle.
