Synopsis "Beowulf: Übersetzt von k. Simrock (in German)"

Das altenglische Heldenepos erzählt von dem jungen Helden Beowulf, der mit seinen Gefährten dem dänischen König, der durch einen Troll bedroht wird, zu Hilfe eilt. Beowulf kann den Troll besiegen, muss sich dann auch noch gegen dessen Mutter durchsetzen und wird anschlie end als Held gefeiert und für sein Heldentum reich belohnt. Im zweiten Teil des Epos blickt der greise Beowulf auf sein Königtum zurück, wird jedoch in seiner Retrospektive gestört durch einen Drachen, den es zu überwinden gilt. Wieder versammelt er seine Gefährten, wieder ist er siegreich. Aber der Preis des Sieges ist hoch.
