Synopsis "Beyond Superstition"

Beyond Superstition: Demystifying African Beliefs About Mental Health examines how cultural beliefs influence the way mental illness is recognized, discussed, and treated in African families and communities. Dr. Emil Fiasorgbor draws on his clinical experience and a personal family experience to explore the consequences of misunderstanding symptoms and delaying care.Through fictional case narratives and clinical explanations, the book considers depression, anxiety, psychosis, and the challenges faced by people living with mental health conditions. It explores stigma, family responses, religious and traditional interpretations, and the role of professional treatment. This second edition invites readers to examine familiar assumptions while respecting the cultural and spiritual values that shape their lives. It encourages families, caregivers, health professionals, and community leaders to recognize distress, listen without judgment, and help people obtain appropriate care.Understanding mental illness begins with seeing the person who is suffering and taking that suffering seriously.
