Der deutsche Komponist, Geiger und Musiktheoretiker Moritz Hauptmann (1792 - 1868) erhielt seine musikalische Ausbildung u.a. bei Ludwig Spohr mit dem ihn später eine enge Freundschaft verband. Auf Empfehlung des Gewandhaus-Kapellmeisters Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy wurde Hauptmann im Jahr 1842 Thomaskantor und Musikdirektor in Leipzig. Er übte dieses Amt bis zu seinem Tode aus. Moritz Hauptmanns Kompositionen umfassen sowohl geistliche als auch weltliche Werke. Er schuf hauptsächlich Chorwerke, Lieder und Motetten. Er hatte insbesondere in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhundert einen hervorragenden Ruf als Musiktheoretiker und Musikpädagoge. Leider sind Wirken und Werke Hauptmanns heute beinahe in Vergessenheit geraten. Ludwig Spohr lebte von 1784 - 1859. Von etwa 1827 bis Mitte der 1840er galt Spohr als der bedeutendste lebende deutsche Komponist.
