Le brun, aussi appel marron, est une couleur qui fait partie des couleurs chaudes. Du fait de son ton sombre il ne fait pas partie des couleurs de l'arc-en-ciel. Il existe diffrents teintes brunes : marron, chtain, chocolat, bistre, spia, beige, acajou, etc. Le nom brun vient du bas latin brunus (VIe sicle, Isidore de Sville), emprunt au germanique *brun, brun, brillant (cf. allemand braun brun ). Le nom marron : En latin Mauricus tait un nom d'homme dans l'Antiquit. Il se rattachait au peuple des Maures, habitants d'une partie de l'Afrique du Nord, qui, pour les Romains, se distinguaient par une couleur de peau assez fonce. Dans le vocabulaire latin dcadent, l'adjectif maurus en vint signifier brun. Par dformation classique, maurus (qui se prononait maourous) s'est transform en maourrou puis marroun.
