Emilio Renzi ha llegado al campus de una prestigiosa universidad de New Jersey para impartir un seminario sobre los años argentinos de W. H. Hudson. Fue invitado por la directora del departamento, la bella y belicosa Ida Brown. Pequeños incidentes y extraños equívocos culminan con la trágica muerte de la profesora Brown en un inexplicable accidente. Que incluye un detalle inquietante: Ida tiene la mano quemada, y eso parece conectarla con una serie de atentados contra figuras del mundo académico. Cuando finalmente se descubre al responsable de los atentados, el asombro es mayúsculo. Se trata de Thomas Munk, profesor de matemáticas en Berkeley y autor de un radical Manifiesto sobre el capitalismo tecnológico. Renzi reconstruye el pasado de Munk y viaja a California para entrevistarlo en la cárcel. Intuye que el destino de Ida está en juego y que nada volverá a ser como antes. Con una escritura hipnótica que pasa naturalmente de la autobiografía al registro policial, esta novela confirma a Ricardo Piglia como uno de los grandes escritores contemporáneos.

Ricardo Piglia (Adrogué, 1941-Buenos Aires, 2017) is unanimously considered a classic of current Spanish-language literature. He published his five novels at Anagrama: Artificial Respiration, The Absent City, Burnt Money (adapted into film by Marcelo Piñeyro; Planeta Prize Argentina), Nocturnal Target (Critics' Prize, Rómulo Gallegos Prize, International Dashiell Hammett Novel Prize, and José María Arguedas Casa de las Américas Narrative Prize) and The Path of Ida; the stories of The Invasion, False Name, Perpetual Prison and The Cases of Commissioner Croce; and the texts of Brief Forms (Bartolomé March Critic's Prize), Criticism and Fiction, The Last Reader, and Personal Anthology, which can be read as the first essays and attempts at a future autobiography, which crystallizes in The Diaries of Emilio Renzi, divided into three volumes. Piglia was also awarded the Grand Prize of Honor of the Argentine Writers Society, the José Donoso, the Ibero-American Narrative Manuel Rojas, the Konex, and the Formentor de las Letras.
