Son of an actress and a theatrical producer and director, Lithgow showed an interest in acting from an early age. In 1973, he won his first Tony Award for his performance in "The Changing Room"

In addition to his acting career, Lithgow has ventured into children's literature, writing several books aimed at children. Among his most notable works are "The Remarkable Farkle McBride" (2000) and "Marsupial Sue" (2001), both belonging to the genre of children's literature and published in English.
