Tras la caída del muro de Berlín, la Unión Soviética desapareció y los Estados Unidos se convirtieron en la principal potencia mundial. Sin embargo, la derecha radical siempre temió el retorno del auge comunista. Desde entonces, esta ha visto en los distintos movimientos de izquierda un gigantesco monstruo de mil cabezas que conspira para cubrir el mundo entero bajo su ominoso manto rojo sangre. Y si bien existen facciones de la izquierda que representan una verdadera amenaza para la democracia, las izquierdas no conforman un grupo unificado, sino que son corrientes con agendas y tendencias muy diferentes entre sí. La derecha radical contemporánea, por su parte, tampoco es un bloque monolítico. Aunque las agrupaciones de este extremo del espectro político comparten ciertos fundamentos ideológicos —nativismo, autoritarismo y populismo—, nada garantiza que sean aliadas naturales. Es más, en muchos casos pueden llegar a ser adversarios mortales. Pero nada mejor que un enemigo común para unir fuerzas contrapuestas. Y, así, la derecha radical ha minimizado o ignorado las diferencias entre los grupos de izquierda para construir un enemigo existencial al que habrá de enfrentar en una épica batalla cultural. ¿Pero quiénes son, finalmente, estos «libertarios», «liberales», «conservadores» que dicen luchar para salvar al pueblo de aquel temible dragón? En esta nueva entrega, Farid Kahhat busca comprender a aquellos actores políticos que conforman la derecha radical contemporánea en América Latina.

Farid Kahhat (Lima, 1959) is a Peruvian sociologist, political scientist, and internationalist of Palestinian origin. He holds a degree in Sociology from PUCP and earned his PhD in Government at the University of Texas, Austin. He serves as a professor of International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and at the Diplomatic Academy of Peru, and is a columnist for media outlets such as El Comercio and América Economía, as well as a commentator on CNN en Español and host of the podcast International Scene-

Among his most notable works are: The Eternal Return: The Radical Right in the Contemporary World (2019, essay), International Security: A Critical Introduction (2019, essay), Pandemics, Dragons and Living Dead: Political Science in Unexpected Places (2021, co-authored with Gabriela Camacho), Violent Times: Russia, Ukraine, China, the United States and the New World Disorder (2022, co-authored with Clemente Rodríguez), and Against the Phantom Threat: The Radical Right in Latin America and the Reinvention of a Common Enemy (2024, essay). These works belong to the genre of political analysis and contemporary history. No literary awards are associated with them.
