Das Denken des englischen Theologen und Philosophen Wilhelm von Ockham (ca. 1285-1347) wird herkömmlicherweise als ein Denken der uneingeschränkten Allmacht Gottes dargestellt. Die Lehre von der Allmacht Gottes bedeutet nach Ockham wie auch nach den meisten mittelalterlichen und neuzeitlichen Theologen und Philosophen allerdings nicht, daß Gottes Macht schlechthin grenzenlos wäre. Sie besagt nur, daß Gott all das tun kann, was keinen logischen Widerspruch enthält. Die Grenze der göttlichen Allmacht - und nach Ockham ist es ihre einzige Grenze - bildet also das Kontradiktionsprinzip. Diese Grenze hebt die Allmacht nicht auf, weil sie sie nicht real einschränkt, sondern sie schafft im Gegenteil die Voraussetzung, um die Allmacht überhaupt sinnvoll denken zu können.
