El papa Francisco recibió en septiembre de 2013 a Gustavo Gutiérrez con motivo de la publicación en Italia del libro escrito por el teólogo peruano fundador de la teología de la liberación y por Gerhard Müller, prefecto de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe. El gesto del Papa fue visto como un espaldarazo a esta corriente teológica que contiene muchos aspectos positivos, como la opción preferencial por los pobres, rasgo fundamental del pontificado del papa Francisco. El libro se publica ahora en España. En él ambos teólogos reflexionan sobre la importancia de la teología de la liberación para la teología actual en su conjunto y para la vida actual de la Iglesia. Lejos de considerarla superada, reivindican su vigencia y recuerdan el compromiso por la justicia que todo cristiano debe asumir como imperativo sustancial.

(Lima, June 8, 1928-2024) Peruvian priest, belongs to the Dominican Order and holds a PhD in theology. With a long pastoral career in Peru as an advisor in the university field (Catholic University Student Movement) and in his parish of Christ the Redeemer, he has always combined this task with fruitful theological reflection. Author of Liberation Theology: Perspectives, (1971) translated into thirteen languages. He is currently a professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, in the United States and a visiting professor at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome (Angelicum). He is also the founder of the Center for Studies and Publications and the Bartolomé de Las Casas Institute. Among his other works stands out In Search of the Poor of Jesus Christ: The Thought of Bartolomé de Las Casas (1992). He has received the Prince of Asturias Award 2003 in the Communication and Humanities category, has been named Doctor Honoris Causa by numerous universities worldwide. In mid-2010 he received the title of Master in Sacred Theology in the Dominican Order and in 2012 the National Culture Award of Peru in the Career category and has just received the “Pacen in terris” Award.
