Schelling apenas contaba veinte años de edad, es la tercera obra publicada por el filósofo, y exhibe ya una madurez y una perfección formal tan inusitadas que hicieron que se hablase unánimemente de su autor como de un «genio precoz». Schelling continúa en este escrito la preocupación heredada de los postkantianos Schulze, Maimon y Reinhold por hacer realidad el «sueño» de Kant de transformar la filosofía en ciencia, y desarrolla la pretensión de Fichte de reducir todo el sistema kantiano a una única proposición, Yo=Yo. La tesis central del ensayo sostiene que el principio de toda filosofía es el Yo absoluto conocido a través de la «intuición intelectual». Schelling concibe este Yo absoluto como libertad, como pura actividad creadora, otorgando preeminencia a la acción sobre el pensar y a la motivación moral sobre el conocimiento.
