«No se trata de un reportaje, ni de un estudio de sociología urbana, sino de un intento de captar la realidad de una época a través de una colección de instantáneas de la vida cotidiana colectiva. Creo que es en la forma de mirar qué hay en los carritos junto a las cajas de un supermercado, en las palabras que se pronuncian para pedir un filete o apreciar un cuadro, donde se leen los deseos y las frustraciones, las desigualdades socioculturales. […] He evitado lo máximo posible ponerme en escena y expresar la emoción que está en el origen de cada texto. Al contrario, he buscado practicar una especie de escritura fotográfica de lo real, en la cual las existencias cruzadas conservarían su opacidad y su enigma.»

Annie Ernaux was born in 1940 in the French region of Normandy. She grew up in the small town of Yvetot and studied literature at the University of Rouen. A teacher of that subject in high schools in Annecy and the Parisian suburbs, she currently lives near the French capital and works at the Centre National d’Enseignement par Correspondance. At Tusquets Editores we have published Pure Passion, Shame, The Event, and The Place (Renaudot Prize, 1984). In 2019, she received the Formentor Prize for her body of work.
