Synopsis "Drawed In: An Appalachian Family Story"

Virgil Eugene Combs is born on July 14, 1940, in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with cerebral palsy. His father Harold is a coal miner. His mother Dora Mae keeps the family together by sheer force of quiet. He has two brothers, Lonnie and Earl Ray. The novel follows Virgil from his birth to his death on his eighty-sixth birthday — the same July Tuesday he was born — and it follows the family around him just as closely. Virgil cannot speak clearly. His hands do not work the way hands are supposed to work. He lives, nonetheless, a full life: he works, he marries Wanda Faye, he raises children, he endures, he is loved and he loves back. The novel does not explain him or redeem him in the way books sometimes do with people like him. It simply shows his life, the way a family shows you a photograph and does not feel the need to say anything about it. It is a literary novel set across eight decades in Perry County, Kentucky. The reader it is written for is someone who grew up knowing people like this, or who wished they had.
