En El astillero alcanzan su madurez, el resplandor más compacto de la derrota, dos invenciones notables de Onetti: el fugaz antihéroe Larsen y la imperecedera, pero nunca nueva, ciudad de Santa María; esa ciudad portuaria que lo mismo podría ser el fantasma de Montevideo o de Buenos Aires, que está cerca de la ciudad argentina de Rosario pero no pertenece a país alguno. Otra vez, frente a este proxeneta con rasgos místicos Larsen, canalla con tanto de hundido como de salvado; frente a esta ciudad inexistente en la realidad pero verdadera, de ficción pero no de juguete, podemos caer en la tentación de felicitar a Onetti por presentar un pedazo descarnado de Latinoamérica, sin exotismo ni prodigios, sin utilizar la impotencia y la erosión para exportar como un folclore alegre y vendible. Pero cualquier habitante de Europa del Este, de los años 30 o de los posteriores a la Segunda Guerra, podría encontrar en esta ciudad catastrófica tantos factores en común como un latinoamericano o un norteamericano de una desolada ciudad del sur. La ambición de Larsen por conquistar a una débil mental o loca recuerda la novela serial de Isaac B. Singer, Shosha, ambientada a fines de los 30 en Polonia, y en Junta cadáveres Larsen tiene más de un punto de contacto con el proxeneta polaco Max que protagoniza la novela de Singer Escoria. No son los continentes ni las épocas, ni las ideas políticas, las que unen los libros o forman generaciones literarias, sino un efluvio inmaterial constituido de reflejos deformados del alma humana, que inquieta a los lectores de cualquier tiempo y lugar.

Juan Carlos Onetti was one of the greatest Uruguayan writers and journalists. After growing up in an environment where he did not finish high school and had to work in various jobs, Onetti traveled to Buenos Aires in 1930, upon marrying his first wife. Once in Argentina, he began to publish film reviews and collaborate in magazines.

After his divorce, Onetti returns to Uruguay, although he travels regularly to Argentina, where he maintains good relations. During these years, Onetti never stops writing despite not finding facilities to publish. In 1936, he unsuccessfully tried to enlist in the International Brigades to participate in the Spanish Civil War.

From 1939, he began working for the Marcha magazine and published his first book, El pozo (1939). In 1941, he joined the Reuters Agency and in 1950 published La vida breve, considered his best novel, a foundational book of Santa María.

In 1975, he decided to settle in Madrid, distancing himself from the military dictatorship established in Uruguay. He continues writing and in 1980 is nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. That same year, he receives the highest accolade in Hispanic letters: the Cervantes Prize. He also garnered other awards, such as the National Literature Prize of Uruguay or the Narrative Criticism Prize.

In 1993, his last novel was published: Cuando ya no importe, in which he closes the universe created around Santa María.

Onetti died in Madrid in 1994.
