Félix Vargas era un muchacho magro, nerviosillo y saltarín. A los ojos le salía alegre su viveza. Miraba siempre de frente y nunca al sesgo como miran los que no tienen limpio el corazón, que tampoco hablan claro, sino que sus frases son también laterales y de soslayo. Se movía Félix por dondequiera, con ágil destreza, y jamás sentíase sobrecogido por el espectáculo del mundo que a tantos cohíbe. Decían que se apellidaba Vargas, pero éste no era su apellido; el suyo propio nadie lo sabía; pudiera ser cualquiera. El Vargas le vino únicamente por aluvión, pues era éste el de un gandul ropirroto y temerón, cordelero a ratos perdidos, que andaba izado con la madre cuando esta pindonga lo soltó al mundo de retorno de una pillería por mesones y molinos.
