Según Georg Simmel (1858-1918), el conflicto no es un accidente en la vida social. El conflicto es parte integrante y necesaria de las sociedades y de las relaciones humanas: es un factor integrador, una forma de socialización sin la que las sociedades no pervivirían.

Simmel invierte, así, la opinión común que sostiene que la cohesión social exige atajar o, cuando menos, apaciguar los antagonismos: antes al contrario, los antagonismos contribuyen a la unidad de la vida social.

En este sentido, nos recuerda que, más allá de las invitaciones de la religión, la poesía o la filosofía a vivir en comunión, concordia y amistad, el ser humano es también animosidad e instinto de lucha: simpatía y hostilidad se entremezclan en la unidad de la vida social e individual.

Georg Simmel (Berlin, 1858 - Strasbourg, 1918) was a German philosopher and sociologist, considered one of the fathers of modern sociology. He studied history and philosophy at the University of Berlin, where he earned his doctorate in 1881 and subsequently taught philosophy between 1885 and 1914. In 1914, he was appointed professor at the University of Strasbourg.

Among his most notable works are "The Problems of the Philosophy of History" (1892), "The Philosophy of Money" (1900), "The Metropolis and Mental Life" (1903), and "Sociology: Studies on the Forms of Socialization" (1908). These works belong to the genre of sociology and social philosophy.
