Christophe Galfard (Paris, 1976) earned his PhD in physics at the University of Cambridge under the guidance of none other than Stephen Hawking. He likes to say that he still keeps the shirt he wore when researching black holes with him, although he has long since left the more closed academic world to guide the general public through the mysteries of the universe. Since then, he has become the most brilliant and rigorous young communicator of the moment, alternating lively lectures, appearances on television programs, and fostering direct conversation with his readers through his website (especially in the "Ask Me About the Universe" section). With that spirit, he has published three novels and also helped his mentor and his daughter Lucy Hawking write a successful children's novel, a New York Times bestseller translated into 45 languages. All his concerns and aspirations have been condensed into the titanic yet accessible The Universe in Your Hand, a book in which he sets out to do two things: leave no reader behind and use just one formula (E=mc2). In Understanding Einstein, his second essay, he confronts the general public with the theory of relativity, the one that changed the course of science and laid the theoretical foundations of the world as we know it.
