León Trotsky responde, en estos polémicos artículos y cartas, a aquellos dentro del movimiento obrero revolucionario que a fines de los años treinta abandonaban la defensa del estado obrero soviético degenerado, que se veía amenazado por la agresión imperialista. Trotsky explica cómo, a la vez que Washington se aprestaba a intervenir en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la creciente presión del patriotismo burgués entre las clases medias hacía eco incluso en el movimiento comu-nista. Explica también que solo un partido que luche por incorporar a sus filas y a su dirección a un número cada vez mayor de trabajadores será capaz de mantener un rumbo revolucionario firme. Al hacerlo, Trotsky defiende las bases materialistas del socialismo científico y la necesidad de su método dialéctico.
León Trotsky formó parte de la dirección bolchevique que V.I. Lenin forjó para conducir la república soviética de trabajadores y campesinos y la Internacional Comunista en sus primeros años. Tras la muerte de Lenin, Trotsky dirigió la lucha por mantener un rumbo comunista ante la creciente resistencia de sectores burocratizados en el partido y aparato estatal soviéticos. Exiliado en 1929 por negarse a abandonar su perspectiva leninista, Trotsky siguió forjando un movimiento comunista internacional desde el exterior. En 1940 fue asesinado en México por un agente de José Stalin.
