El presente volumen ofrece algunas de las más importantes contribuciones científicas realizadas por el doctor Winnicott en su ámbito de estudio. De hecho, la consideración de su obra va creciendo día a día, y cada vez se reconoce más su valor no sólo entre los psicoanalistas, sino también entre los psicólogos, los educadores, los trabajadores sociales y, en fin, todos los hombres y mujeres que trabajan en el campo de la medicina: más específicamente, en cualquier contexto profesional cuya labor tenga que ver con la salud de la población infantil. Buena parte de la trascendencia de estos escritos radica en el enfoque ambivalente con que el autor observa sus temas de investigación: para él, la pediatría da forma al psicoanálisis, pero el psicoanálisis también ilumina el terreno de la pediatría. Sus textos, así, no tienen que ver tanto con la renovación de los conceptos básicos de la técnica psicoanalítica como con la formulación y comprobación de ideas que tienen su origen en el trabajo clínico diario, en el fondo la base sobre la que se fundó la experiencia médica de Winnicott a lo largo de toda su vida profesional.

(1896-1971) English pediatrician and psychoanalyst, one of the major figures in the psychoanalytic movement following Freud. Studied medicine at the University of Cambridge. During World War I, he was drafted and served as a surgeon. After completing his service, he was able to finish his degree, specializing in pediatrics. While studying pediatrics, he began to show interest in Freudian psychoanalysis after meeting Ernest Jones, psychoanalyst and biographer of Sigmund Freud, who encouraged him to start his Didactic Analysis with James Strachey, a psychoanalysis he later continued with Joan Rivière. Later, Donald Winnicott joined the British Psychoanalytical Society, eventually becoming its president towards the end of his life.
