Synopsis "first shift - legacy (part 6 of the silo series)"

In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platform that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, the CBS network re-aired a program about the effects of propranolol on sufferers of extreme trauma. A simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity's broad history, mankind had discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall. And the ability to forget it ever happened.

Hugh Howey is a former bookseller who has achieved his dream: writing and being able to live off it, thanks to his bestseller Wool. He currently lives in Jupiter, Florida, with his wife, Amber, and his dog, Bella.
In 2011, the online bookstore Amazon witnessed the birth of a new sales phenomenon on its website, on par with Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James. Wool (originally titled Wool) was self-published by its author, Hugh Howey, in electronic format and within a few months had positioned itself among the top spots on The New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. Given the expectations created and backed by an unprecedented public and critical success, the publisher Simon & Schuster decided to acquire the paper publication rights and launched the book to the market last March.

Wool was originally published as five short stories; the success achieved with the first of the tales was what motivated Howey to continue developing the world he had created. With the strategy of serial publication, and thanks to word-of-mouth, Howey managed to attract new followers with each new publication.
This was the beginning of Wool, a phenomenon that has sold 500,000 eBooks on Amazon and will be published in eighteen countries. The film rights to the book have been acquired by Century Fox and the big screen adaptation will feature production by Ridley Scott and screenwriter Steven Zaillian (responsible for works such as Schindler's List or Gangs of New York).
