Synopsis "Frog Eyes: (an Evening with James Baldwin)"

Excited over hot kisses and promises of undying love from a handsome stranger, author James Baldwin closes a dingy New York bar for the young man and examines his life while doing so. This special night is his last on American soil. Baldwin tries to convince himself that this electric encounter is the "real deal." He desperately wants to believe that -- finally, as life winds down, he has found true love. Yet, Baldwin senses that the promises he heard and cherishes so dearly are made of sand -- not brick. Alas, in a lifetime of rejection, ridicule, humiliation and danger, this too is but another painful hour for a sweet and gentle spirit. Slight of build, black, frog-eyed, unattractive, brilliant and gay, Baldwin maintains his dignity after the flames of self-doubt, disillusion and rejection sear him during his brutal self-examination. In the end, Baldwin realizes that his powerful writing, his unflinching faith, love and hope for his people and immature country, are far more important than what Fate decrees for one lonely, aging broken heart.
