Grundsätzlich können alle dem Organismus zugeführten Stoffe oberhalb einer gewissen Dosis Schaden anrichten und sind somit ab dieser Wirkmenge als giftig anzusehen. Paracelsus schrieb 1538: Alle Dinge sind Gift, und nichts ist ohne Gift; allein die Dosis machts, da ein Ding kein Gift sei. (Paracelsus 1538). Eine Giftschlange oder ein Löwe sind ebenso wenig ethisch abzulehnen, weil sie für den Menschen potentiell tödlich sein können, wie die Früchte der Tollkirsche oder der Blaue Eisenhut bei leichtsinnigem Umgang lethal wirken können. Aber die Schuld ist weder bei Löwe und Schlange noch bei Tollkirsche und Blauem Eisenhut zu suchen, sondern beim naturfernen Menschen mit lückenhaftem Wissen und fehlender Empathie. Dem soll mit diesem Buch abgeholfen werden.
